Turkey Lurkey: Gang of Giant Birds Running Amok in Small Town, Prompting 911 Calls
There have been numerous reports of turkeys terrorizing this California town.
Wild turkeys are terrorizing residents in a small California town, prompting the city to hold a vote to remove and relocate the birds from the area — just in time for Thanksgiving.
The town of Davis has been left paralyzed by the fowl play, which has sparked numerous 911 calls.
One resident told Inside Edition: “Everybody has a turkey story. Most of them have been, 'I had been late to work because I was waiting for the turkeys to cross H Street.'"
Another citizen told a 911 dispatcher: “This is really embarrassing I am trying to get in my office and I have this huge turkey surrounding my car, circling me.”
Signs have been posted in the town that advise people on what to do if they are being harassed by an aggressive turkey, including, “do not be fearful,” “be assertive. Clap your hands,” “do not run,” and to use a backpack or umbrella to “defend yourself.”
The leader of the turkey gang even has a name – “Downtown Tom.”
City of Davis Wildlife Specialist John McNerney told Inside Edition: “You are interacting with a bird that is trying to dominate you and they are behaving like that.”
In October, the Davis City Council voted 4-1 in favor of a trap-and-release program to help alleviate the wild turkey problem. According to the Davis Enterprise Record: "The plan will cost the city about $20,400 in immediate equipment costs and $5,500 to $11,500 in subsequent years."
Councilwoman Rochelle Swanson told the Davis Enterprise Record: “We can either proactively be a part of the solution... or we can have it come back to us when people have taken (the issue) into their own hands or someone seriously gets hurt.”
