Lucky the 2-Headed Calf Dies, a Week Before Receiving Life-Changing Surgery
"108 days is a long time for her, and we're glad to have had her in our lives," said Brandy McCubbin, who considered the cow a part of her family.
"We got her longer than we ever thought we would," Brandy McCubbin, owner of the Taylor County farm, told InsideEdition.com. "It's been hard, but we kind of expected it."
Lucky was born on September 16, 2016, and lived for 108 days before passing away Monday. She is the longest surviving calf born with two faces, after the previous record holder reportedly survived for only 40 days.
"They thought she wouldn't survive, and she did," McCubbin said. "108 days is a long time for her, and we're glad to have had her in our lives."
She said that for two days, Lucky seemed to have lost her appetite.
"She kind of quit eating," McCubbin said. "She wouldn't suck her bottle. We had to tube feed her."
On the third day, Lucky mooed as the family entered the barn for her morning feedings, but acted differently than usual. They tried to load her into the truck to take her to the veterinarian, but she passed away before they made it that far.
"Her body just wore out," she said. "We miss her. It's weird not going to the barn to check on her every morning."
The family has since buried the calf's body near a creek on their farm.
Lucky was bottle fed because she had problems eating out of either of her mouths, McCubbin said.
A veterinary team at the University of Illinois had agreed to evaluate Lucky in a CT scan to see if she would be eligible for surgery to fix her mouth and cleft palate.
"That's really what she needed, but it's too late for that," McCubbin said.
The family had even raised up to $1,200 for the surgery. McCubbin said they are now researching different organizations to donate the money.
"I think her story has reached many," McCubbin said. "She was unique, that's for sure."
