Lady Gaga Gets Patriotic in Halftime Performance, Strays Away From Politics
She jumped off the roof to start off her high-energy performance.
Lady Gaga’s patriotic halftime show during Super Bowl LI lacked an obvious political statement despite speculation that she would go on some sort of anti-White House tirade.
Many thought Gaga, an outspoken supporter of Hillary Clinton during the presidential campaign, would use her platform to speak out on issues and criticize the Trump administration.
Instead, she spread a message of unity in a high-energy performance.
The star set off the show with a performance of “God Bless America” and “This Land is Your Land” beneath 300 red, white, and blue drones forming an American flag.
The singer ended her intro with the pledge of allegiance before leaping off the roof (while suspended) and onto the stage to perform some of her greatest hits, including "Poker Face," "Born This Way," and "Just Dance."
When asked about whether her message would get political during a press conference last week, the singer said she has a passion for inclusion, and would perform along those lines.
"I believe in the spirit of equality and the spirit of this country as one of love, and compassion, and kindness," Gaga said. "My performance will uphold those philosophies."
Gaga also performed "Telephone," the hit song she recorded with Beyoncé, but there was no surprise appearance by Queen Bey, who announced she was pregnant with twins last week.
But Sans Beyonce and politics, the performance was still a hit with high-profile fans, many of which taking to Twitter to express their approval.
