Fiona the Famous Preemie Hippo Shows Off Her Swimming Skills

Cincinnati Zoo's famous preemie hippo, Fiona, is showing just how far she's come in her latest video.
In GoPro footage taken beneath the surface of the water, the baby Nile hippo happily bobs along in a pool without any help.
"Get a glimpse of Fiona’s underwater moves," the zoo said. "She’s working hard on doing a roll but hasn’t quite made it 360 yet."
When Fiona was born more than six weeks early on January 24, she weighed just 29 pounds, which is 25 pounds lighter than the lowest recorded birth weight for the species, the zoo reported.
She wasn’t strong enough to stand or nurse from her mom, 17-year-old Bibi, so Fiona required around-the-clock care from zookeepers.
The zoo has kept Fiona fans updated with her progress. Last month, they shared footage of her first wobbly steps and revealed last week that she has grown enough to get a bigger pool.
"Hippos don't actually swim," the zoo said. "They float and are able to hold their breath for long periods. Spending time in the pool will help Fiona build muscle and lung strength, keep her skin moist and let her act like a hippo!"
The local community has also rallied behind Fiona. A NICU team from the Cincinnati Children's Hospital sent over a care package for the preemie hippo, including her own hippo toy. And at the end of February, Cincinnati Children’s vein specialists responded when she was dehydrated and required an IV drip.
