This Woman Has Suffered 2 Serious Strokes, All Before Age 25
Sarah Porter suffers from a malformation in her brain called a cavernoma.
As unimaginable as it may seem, this 24-year-old woman from Maine has suffered two strokes.
Sarah Porter, now 26, had always been the picture of fitness and extremely active, but that all came to a devastating halt at age 20 when she suffered a stroke.
"Even I didn't think that something like stroke could happen to someone my age, young and healthy," Porter, who has made a remarkable recovery since the strokes, told Inside Edition. "I felt a tingly sensation in my arm and I really was having trouble using my right leg."
She later discovered she was born with a malformation in her brain called a cavernoma, which is a cluster of abnormal blood vessels that occur be anywhere in the brain.
Recovery was slow, and to make matters worse, it happened again four years later.
"I walked to the hospital and walked into the ER and said, 'Hi, my name is Sarah Porter, I'm 24 years old, I had a stroke four years ago and I’m having another one right now.'"
During her ordeal, she documented her process through a series of videos.
Porter is not alone, as there has been a sharp increase in young people between 25 and 45 having strokes.
"It's becoming more common actually for young women to have strokes and that's one of the reasons Sarah's story is so important to hear," Becky Smith of the American Heart Association told Inside Edition.
There are signs you should look out for such as facial drooping, arm weakness, and slurred speech.
But Porter is proof that you can thrive even after suffering a stroke at such a young age.
"I am not the picture of a stroke survivor," she said.
