Woman Gets a Bill for More Than $1,000 After Miscarriage: 'It Was Salt in The Wound'

In total, the procedure cost more than $5,000.
A Missouri woman has said she was charged more than $1,000 after suffering a miscarriage.
Janie Faville, 27, was nine weeks along when her pregnancy ended. It was an emotional time, and when she received the bill, it only added to her stress.

On the bill that Faville posted to Facebook, the total cost of her dilation and curettage procedure (D&C) was $5,584 and her insurance plan paid all of it except $1,369.57.
"I had signed financial agreements the morning of the procedure, so I knew how much money the procedure cost and wasn't surprised when it came, but it was still salt in the wound,” Faville told insideEdition.com.
Faville also said the bill shows the problem with our health care system.
“Because people don’t talk about it, I will," she wrote in the post. "This is how much a miscarriage costs with good insurance. THIS is why we need Planned Parenthood.”
Faville said there are those who are uninsured and wouldn’t have been able to afford to make payments on thousands of dollars in medical debt.
"I felt thankful that I have the coverage that I do and the ability to make the decisions that are best for my health and well-being," Faville said. "In cases of miscarriage, many women can't afford the costs of a D&C. As a result, they choose to wait it out and try to let their bodies pass the remaining tissue. This can be extremely painful mentally and physically and increases the risk of infection and future complications."

Many women commented on Faville’s post that they had no idea about the debt that can be accrued from having a miscarriage, while others related to her experience.
“It's like paying for someone to rip a piece of your heart out. I remember feeling appalled at all my bills from the emergency room, all the [doctors], and even the additional ultrasound just to tell me all traces of my baby was gone," one commenter wrote.
