Mom Beats, Chokes Daughter For Being Unable to Recite Bible Verses: Cops

Rhonda Kemp Shoffner ordered her daughter, who is under the age of 13, to get on her knees and recite lines from the Bible, police said.

A Pennsylvania woman was arrested for viciously attacking her young daughter and kicking her out of her home after the girl incorrectly recited Bible verses, officials said.

It was allegedly the third day in a row that Rhonda Kemp Shoffner, 41, was drunk when she ordered her daughter to get on her knees in the bathroom after the girl could not get ahold of multiple family members on the phone on March 14, police told

Her daughter, who is under the age of 13, told police that she pleaded with her mother to not make her get on her knees, because she knew that that meant her mother was going to beat her.

But Shoffner reportedly became enraged, telling the alleged victim “to get on her [expletive] knees,” police said.

Then the mother began quoting Bible verses and demanded the child repeat the lines verbatim, authorities said.

Every time the girl incorrectly recited a verse or gave her mother a wrong answer, Shoffner allegedly slammed her daughter's head into the bathroom drywall, cops said.

She went on to bang her daughter’s head against the wall about five times before ordering her to lie on her back, telling the child: “I’m gonna kill you [expletive],” police said.

Shoffner choked her daughter, cutting off her airway and biting her forearm before digging her teeth into the girl’s left shoulder, police told

All the while, the girl fought back and begged her mother to stop, she said.

Finally, Shoffner said: “Just leave and don’t ever come back.”

The little girl grabbed a phone, coat and sneakers and fled.

She called her father, who drove her to the police station.

Shoffner was charged with aggravated assault against a child, strangulation and terroristic threats.

A month earlier on February 10, police responding to Shoffner’s home encountered the mother half naked and leaning out of a window where she screamed obscenities and told the officers to get off of her property, according to reports.

She then gave the officers the middle finger and told them that if they came through the front door, she “got something for us,” wrote.

After police determined there was no victim at the scene, they told Shoffner that they were reporting her and went on to file charges of open lewdness and disorderly conduct.

Shoffner's preliminary hearings on both sets of charges are scheduled on March 29.

She is currently being held at Dauphin County Prison on $100,000 bail.
