10 Cheetah Cubs Make Their Debut After 'Cheetah Boom' at the Zoo

Ten baby cheetahs have made their debut at a Virginia Zoo after a "cheetah boom" last month.

The cubs, born to two different mothers at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, could be seen in footage provided by the zoo, cuddling and making soft hissing noises.

Happy, a 3-year-old cheetah, gave birth to five healthy cubs on March 23, and Miti, a 7-year-old cheetah gave birth to seven cubs five days later, an astounding sight for zoo workers.

"The average litter size is three, so this time, we’ve got an incredible pile of cubs," cheetah biologist Adrienne Crosier said in a statement.

However, two of Miti’s cubs that appeared to be "visibly smaller and less active" by zoo officials died shortly after birth.

Despite the loss of the two cubs, the zoo reported that those remaining and their mothers are doing well and successfully nursing.
