Man Breaks Into Home, Has Some Milk and Cookies and Takes a Nap: Cops
Cops say Matthew Keith Dunham broke into a Fruita, Colo., house whose owner was alerted to the intruder by children in the home.
A reportedly homeless man recently broke into a Colorado home, where he ate a snack, kicked off his shoes and took a nap on the couch, police said.
A homeowner in Fruita called police before dawn Monday after he said he was woken up by his child, who told him a stranger was in the house.
According to an arrest affidavit obtained by the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel, a little girl in the house said suspect Matthew Keith Dunham woke her up and she saw him standing over her bed with his hands raised and saying things like, "I am harmless. I need help."
According to the report, there was a pair of boots located next to the couch, an empty box of Oreo cookies and a glass of milk with cookie crumbs in it on the kitchen table.
Cops say there was also a series of notes scrawled on paper towels and the refrigerator by the suspect, which read things such as, "Harmless no clue where I am @t?? Sleep on couch" and "help 2:43 harmls."
When the homeowner asked the suspect to leave, he reportedly just repeated that he needed help before the homeowner dragged him out.
When police arrived, Dunham told them he last remembered being at a truck stop in Fruita and remembered nothing else before waking up in the house.
He was arrested and booked on charges of burglary, criminal mischief and theft. He remains held as of Friday.
At a bond hearing, Dunham's public defender said her client was seeking mental health treatment, employment and a place to live.
Dunham is due in court April 28.
