9-Year-Old Girl Sells Lemonade to Stop Her Local Library From Closing
Mia Maguire raised hundreds of dollars in just one day.
A 9-year-old Massachusetts girl took the phrase “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade” literally when she found out her local library may close.
Mia Maguire heard the library in Berkley, which has been open since 1893, could close due to budget cuts and decided to raise money by selling lemonade in front of the building Saturday.
“Mia wanted to do something about it," Samantha Maguire, Mia’s older sister, told InsideEdition.com. "We thought it was a good idea. We went to the dollar store and got a sign. We also got the powdered lemonade."
Samantha said at 50 cents a cup, they weren’t thinking they would make more than $50.
But they were pleasantly surprised.
“The first hour she made $100,” Maguire said.
By the end of the day, the 9-year-old earned a whopping $625. Maguire said many people came out just to make donations.
“Mia literally held that sign all day long. It was really an incredible thing to witness. We did not know it would be such a big event,” Maguire said.
Maguire said she was happy to see the community sticking together.
“I didn’t know how many people cared about the library like we do,” she said.
Maguire said they will give the money earned to the library on Tuesday.
Whether the library will close will be decided with a town vote later this summer.
