White Man Sentenced to Prison for Hatchet Attack on Black Man

Daniel Volker, 51, was arrested after a three-hour standoff with police, authorities said.

A white Minnesota man was sentenced to two years and three months in prison Tuesday for trying to hit a black man with a hatchet in a racially motivated attack.

Daniel Volkers, 51, pleaded guilty to second-degree assault with a weapon, motivated by bias, in a deal reached with prosecutors. In exchange, three counts involving bias and making threats were dropped.

In February, Volkers confronted a black man sitting inside a car in a St. Cloud parking lot. The 45-year-old man said he opened the door and asked Volkers what he wanted.

That’s when Volkers started swinging the hatchet, the man told police. He was able to get back in his car and lock the door without being struck.

The man later told St. Cloud Police Department officers that he saw the white man enter a nearby apartment.

A three-hour stand-off with a SWAT team followed. Officers eventually knocked down Volkers’ door and found him hiding in a closet. A hatchet was discovered inside his apartment, authorities said.

Following his arrest, investigators said Volkers used the N-word during questioning.
