The search for 17-year-old Chelsea King ends in tragedy as her body is found in a shallow grave. INSIDE EDITION reports from the San Diego neighborhood where emotions are running high.
Drama at the home of the sex predator accused of murdering 17-year-old Chelsea King.
These shocking words, "Chelsea's blood is on you. Move out" were spray painted in red, like blood, on the garage door in San Diego where 30-year-old John Gardner lived with his mother. But when two men came to paint over the graffiti, they were confronted by an angry neighbor.
Police stood guard outside the house as emotions in the neighborhood ran high. Gardner had served five years for sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl in 2000.
"The laws have to change. They have to change. We have to protect our children," said one neighbor.
Thousands of neighbors turned out for an emotional candlelight vigil Tuesday night for Chelsea just hours after her body was found in a shallow grave. Somehow, Chelsea's parents found the courage to join them.
"I always called my daughter my angel. She's my angel forever. I want to thank you. Chelsea wants thank you. Keep her spirit alive for us," said Chelsea's father.
Someone in the crowd shouted, "We love you!"
Chelsea's father responded, "We love all of you too."
Chelsea was jogging in a park when she was attacked and now women all over America are wondering what they can do to protect themselves.
Our Lisa Guerrero went jogging with personal safety expert Kelly Campbell, who showed what to do in case of attack. Campbell says to strike the attacker in the groin to release his hold on you, then scream so that others can hear you.
Campbell said three important precautions should be taken.
1. Carry a whistle to use to raise the alarm. "Being loud yourself and having a noise that could hurt them might also deter them and make them run and flee the scene," said Campbell.
2. Carry cars keys which may be used as a weapon. "I would be aiming for something towards the eye socket and the face area because it's soft tissue areas," said Campbell.
3. And be aware of your surroundings, don't play your iPod too loud. Use only one of the iPod earphones and turn down the volume.
