Rick Perry Controversy Ignites Sparks on The View
The controversy over the original name of some land leased by Rick Perry's family caused a spark between Sherri Shepherd and Barbara Walters on The View. INSIDE EDITION has the scoop.
There were fireworks ignited on The View as Barbara Walters squared off with co-host Sherri Shepherd. The spat broke out in a debate about GOP presidential candidate Rick Perry and the name of a hunting ranch his family leased years ago.
When Perry's family leased the land in the early 1980's, the name of the place, "N-----head," was written out on a rock at the entrance to the gated property.
Sherri Shepherd said to Walters, "I didn't like the way you said it. Because when you say it, you say N-I- (blank), and I don't like (blank)."
Walters asked Shepherd, "If I were reporting on this, you mean I can't use the word if I'm reporting?"
Shepherd said, "You can do anything you want, Barbara. You're Barbara Walters."
"No, no. That has nothing to do with it," replied Walters.
Perry told The Washington Post: "I paid a visit to the property with a friend and saw the rock with the offensive word. After my visit I called my folks and mentioned it to them, and they painted it over during their next visit."
The governor of Texas said the word on the rock was an "offensive name that has no place in the modern world."
Perry's rival for the Republican ticket, Herman Cain, said Perry's explanation was not good enough.
"The name of the place was called (blank) head. And that's very insensitive," said Cain on This Week with Christiane Amanpour.
Cain now says, he feels differently.
"His question was, was I satisfied with Governor Perry's explanation about the name on that ranch where he went hunting, and I said, 'Yes I am.' Next question," said Cain.
