Madonna is speaking out for the first time about Whitney Houston's death and wants to know why the people around her would, "allow it to happen."
Madonna says she felt a special bond with Whitney because they both rocketed to fame around the same time.
Madonna told the London Sun, "I remember looking at her singing and hearing people talk about her, and just thinking, 'Oh my god. She's such a beautiful woman and my god, what an incredible voice. I wish I could sing like that.' "
Madonna says the deaths of Whitney Houston and also Amy Winehouse were "huge losses."
"You reflect and you think, 'How did it happen?' " said Madonna.
Meanwhile, the ratings are in for Oprah Winfrey's blockbuster interview with Whitney's daughter, Bobbi Kristina. It attracted 3.5 million viewers—the largest audience in the history of the struggling OWN network. That's an astounding 417 percent better than the usual rating for Oprah's Next Chapter.
The show included a dramatic moment-by-moment account by Whitney's sister-in-law, Patricia Houston of how Whitney was found in the bathtub of her suite at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
"I heard screams and saw the hairstylist drop to her knees," recalled Patricia.
She could barely speak as she described the scene in the hallway, saying, "I was numb. I said, 'Dial 911.' "
Inside the room, Whitney was laying on the floor as her bodyguard, Patricia's brother, desperately performed CPR.
"I saw my brother trying to revive her to the point of exhaustion. And I said, 'Ray, let it go.' He was on his knees. He said, 'I tried.' I felt so badly for him," said Patricia.
Describing how Whitney looked at that moment, Patricia Houston fought back tears.
She said, "Then I saw her. She had a peaceful look on her face."
