John Travolta Faces a P.R. Nightmare
The new allegations against John Travolta are a public relations disaster for the actor and open the doors again to his sexuality. INSIDE EDITION takes a look at Travolta's past.
John Travolta has long projected the image of an adoring family man. Now, he's facing a public relations disaster.
Bonnie Fuller from Hollywoodlife.com said, "I am sure that John Travolta is concerned that these new lawsuits will threaten the image that he has carefully cultivated himself as a devoted family man."
Whispers about whether Travolta was leading a double life reached a crescendo in 2006, when he was seen kissing a man on the steps of a private jet. Travolta said it was not a romantic kiss. Travolta's lawyer said, "As a manner of customary greeting and saying farewell, Mr. Travolta kisses both women and men whom he considers to be extremely close friends. People who are close to Mr. Travolta are aware of his customary, non-romantic gesture."
As far back as 1990, The National Enquirer ran a cover story describing an alleged affair between Travolta and a gay porn star who appeared with him in the 1985 movie, Perfect. The actor later retracted his story, under what he said was pressure from Travolta's legal team.
Star Wars actress and Jenny Craig spokeswoman, Carrie Fisher is the only celebrity ever to speak publicly about Travolta's sexuality.
"My feeling about John has always been that we know and we don't care," she said in 2010. "Look, I'm sorry that he's uncomfortable with it, and that's all I can say," she told The Advocate.
Travolta and his wife, Kelly Preston, have been married for 21 years. Both are devout Scientologists, a church that frowns on homosexuality and even purports to offer a "cure."
At least in public, the Travolta-Preston marriage certainly seems happy.
They've had three children, including Jett, who tragically died from a seizure in 2009. They found happiness again with the arrival of their son, Ben, just last year. Preston was 48 when she gave birth.
Now the Travoltas are hunkering down for the biggest challenge yet to their family name.
