Manti Te'o Hoaxster Disguised His Voice As A Woman
The Manti Te'o girlfriend hoax just keeps getting weirder. It's been revealed the voice on the other end of Te'o's phone calls was a man. INSIDE EDITION has the latest.
Just when you thought the Manti Te'o hoax couldn't get any weirder, comes a new bombshell.
The guy allegedly behind the hoax actually pretended to be a girl when he spoke to Te'o on the phone.
In a just-released voicemail, the hoaxer left the football star, he sure sounds like a she.
In one just-released voicemail, the female-sounding voice said, "Baby, I'm just calling to say goodnight. I love you. I know that you're probably doing homework or with the boys. I'll talk to you tomorrow. I love you so much hun, sweet dreams."
"Oh Man! Dude talked like a lady to fool star," reads the headline in the New York Daily News.
The lawyer for the hoaxer says he used a falsetto voice and spent hundreds of hours on the phone with Te'o who thought it was a female he was talking with.
The alleged hoaxer Ronaiah Tuiasosopo even cried in one voicemail, saying, "I don't know who answered your phone...and I don't care. You made it clear what you want, take care."
The voicemails were given to Katie Couric as Te'o tries to convince that nation that he was a victim of the hoax and not a perpetrator.
Te'o told Couric that he once spent eight hours on the phone, thinking his fake girlfriend was in a coma. Then, miraculously, she woke up.
"She started to kind of whisper my name, and I jumped for joy. I was like, 'Oh, she's out! She's talking!.' " said Te'o.
So, how did the hoaxer pull it off? His lawyer says he was able to sound like a girl because he was president of his high school drama club and a singer. He even auditioned last year for the hit NBC show, The Voice.
Tuiasosopo's lawyer Milton Grimes said, "This wasn't a prank to make fun. It was a person with a troubled existence trying to reach out and communicate and have a relationship."
Te'o is working out in Florida in preparing for the NFL draft.
