President Obama Raises Eyebrows Over Kamala Harris Comments
At a fundraising event in California, President Obama made a few comments about the state's Attorney General, Kamala Harris that are raising eyebrows. INSIDE EDITION has the details.
The president is publicly apologizing for saying California’s attorney general is hot.
The president called California’s 48-year-old Attorney General Kamala Harris to apologize.
White House press secretary Jay Carney said, "He called to apologize for the distraction created by his comments."
The uproar began when President Obama told supporters, "She's brilliant, she's dedicated and she's tough. She also happens to be by far the best-looking Attorney General in the country." As the audience laughed he said, "It's true. Come on." He also said several times she is "easy on the eyes."
Todd Gillman of the Dallas Morning News was there in San Francisco covering the private fundraiser.
INSIDE EDITION's Les Trent asked Gillman, "What do you make of all the talk today of the president's remarks?"
Gillman said, "It probably is the fact that the Attorney General of California is pretty easy on the eyes, but it is a whole different thing to notice that than say it publically."
Social media erupted over the remarks with tweets, calling them "Disgraceful,” "Really terrible for workplace equality,” "Awkward" and "Sexist."
TV commentators said the president crossed a line.
On CBS This Morning, Norah O'Donnell said, "Things come out of your mouth sometimes."
Gayle King replied, "Even when your hit the rewind button."
Charlie Rose then said, "He just kept saying how great she was and how smart she was. I mean come on."
But Fox and Friends’ Gretchen Carlson defended Obama.
She said, "I don't think people should be totally offended by it. If a nice looking man walked down the street I'd say wow a great looking guy."
Brian Kilmeade then said, "But you wouldn't grab his butt!"
Calrson said, "No! That's totally different Brian!"
The 48-year-old former prosecutor is a rising star in the Democratic Party and wowed last years' Democratic National Convention with a rousing speech.
Kamala Harris is being tipped to be a new Supreme Court justice. She's also being groomed as a future presidential candidate.
Meanwhile, Michelle Obama is also raising eyebrows, referring to herself in a TV interview as a single mom.
“Believe me, as a busy single mother or I shouldn't say single, as a busy mother,' she said.
She quickly corrected herself and made light of the slip, “When you've got a husband who's president, it can feel a little single. But he's there.'
