Census Outrage: Census Taker Recognized as Registered Sex Offender
A woman was shocked when she answered her door to a U.S. Census taker and recognized him as a registered sex offender! INSIDE EDITION reports.
When Amy Schmalbach opened her door to a census taker she had a feeling something was wrong.
"His behavior was extremely odd. He wasn't just a straightforward person. His eyes were sort of darting all over the place," Schmalbach says.
She was home alone with her 3-year-old son Lucas. As she answered the census taker's questions she remembered where she had seen him before.
"I thought, 'My goodness this is the person from the sex offender registry.' "
That's right, the census worker was a registered sex offender! Schmalbach says she checks the state registry regularly to keep her family safe.
The census taker is 47-year-old Frank Kuni, who was convicted in 1996 of endangering the welfare of a child. He served three years in prison.
He uses numerous aliases, including bizarre names like "Phantom Flam" and "Toot Flynn."
"I always remembered him because he had so many aliases, one of which was the name he gave me that evening."
So how did a convicted sex offender get hired as a census taker? INSIDE EDITION has learned he applied for the job using an alias and was sent on four days of training. He was fingerprinted and given a background check, but by the time the results showing his criminal record came, he was already canvassing homes in the neighborhood.
After Schmalbach alerted authorities, Kuni was arrested and may face federal charges. And the New Jersey housewife is being hailed as a hero.
Kuni is now in jail, charged with false representation and impersonating a public official.
