'The Butler' Makeup Artist Reveals Movie Magic
INSIDE EDITION's Jim Moret learns firsthand the magic of movie makeup from Oscar-winning makeup artist Matthew Mungle.
Who's the old man portraying President Dwight Eisenhower in a new movie? Hint—he usually plays it for laughs.
Believe it or not, it's Robin Williams, who's been remarkably transformed into Ike in the movie Lee Daniels' The Butler. Williams himself knows the role was bit of a "stretch" for him.
"It's not someone people would think I'd be playing," said Williams.
Oscar-winning makeup artist Matthew Mungle is the man behind the magic, working with molds of the stars' faces. How did he make Robin Williams look like Ike?
"No hair, a little fringe at the back, a little bit of a combover. So we put a bald cap on him," explained Mungle.
Williams isn't the only actor to be amazingly transformed in the movie. John Cusack is President Richard Nixon, best remembered for these words, "I'm not a crook!"
"Nixon is all about the nose. It's also all about the jowely look that Nixon had," said Mungle.
Jane Fonda really nails it as Nancy Reagan, with Alan Rickman as Ronald Reagan. They certainly look like the president and first lady in the film.
James Marsden and Minka Kelly are equally convincing as as JFK and Jackie.
About JFK, Mungle said, "It's all about the hair."
And perhaps the most impressive transformation is Liev Schreiber as Lyndon B. Johnson.
"He had the most prosthetic work of all of the presidents," said Mungle.
Forest Whitaker, portraying a butler who serves under all these presidents, ages more than thirty years in the course of the story.
The makeup magician demonstrated his aging powers on INSIDE EDITION's Jim Moret's face, adding gelatin jowls and earlobes.
Moret asked, "How old will I be?"
"I'd say you'll age about twenty years," Mungle explained as he worked on Moret's ears. "As we get older, our earlobes get longer."
Mungle added wrinkles on Moret's brow and eyelids. After an hour-and-a-half, he handed Moret a mirror.
Moret reacted, "Holy cow! I sure hope this stuff comes off!"
