Tom Cruise Files Defamation Suit Against Magazine Publisher

Tom Cruise is suing a magazine over reports that he says falsley claim he abandoned his daughter. INSIDE EDITION has the details.

"I did not abandon Suri!"

In just filed court documents, a defiant Tom Cruise wrote, "I have in no way cut Suri out of my life—whether physically, emotionally, financially or otherwise."

Cruise is suing Life & Style and In Touch magazines for $50 million for running the following headlines in 2012: "Suri In Tears, Abandoned By Her Dad" and "Abandoned By Daddy."

Sharon Osbourne from The Talk commented, "He is absolutely right to do this. Those tabloids that he's suing, I can't believe some of the headlines they put in."

On the dates in question, Cruise was mostly in Iceland peforming his sci-fi epic Oblivion.

INSIDE EDITION has obtained a two-page declaration signed by Cruise in which he said, "I was a constant presence in Suri's life during the time that defendants claim I falsely abandoned her. Suri and I saw each other in person in July, August, November, and December 2012."

Cruise said he was in constant communication with little Suri, "Even during the times when I was working overseas and was not able to see Suri in person, we were, and continue to be, extremely close. We spoke on the phone nearly every day."

Legal analyst Royal Oakes told INSIDE EDITION, "The key is for Tom Cruise to be able to prove the truth of what he says in his declaration to establish that he had the visits with the daughter that he claims he had."

Cruise concluded the declaration, "While I'm sure my daughter misses me when I am not with her, as I miss her, she is a very happy child, and we have a wonderful relationship and cheerful phone calls."

Last year, the publisher of Life & Style and In Touch magazines argued that the stories were "substantially true."

Tom and ex-wife Katie Holmes divorced in 2012. Later this month, they would have celebrated their seventh wedding anniversary.
