Elizabeth Edwards is speaking out about the details of her decision to end her marriage to former Senator John Edwards. INSIDE EDITION has the details.
"I think about Sandra Bullock." Elizabeth Edwards told the Today Show she's inspired by Sandra Bullock, another woman who's had to deal with a husband's infidelity.
"What an incredible year she's had, she won the Academy Award. And yet, the stories you hear are not about all those great successes but about the failure of her marriage," Elizabeth said.
John Edwards's estranged wife says she and Sandra have something else in common.
"I assume she wants to reclaim who she is in the same way I want to reclaim who I am," Elizabeth said on the Today Show.
Elizabeth is promoting the paperback version of her memoir, Resilience, for which she wrote a powerful new chapter about her decision to end her marriage.
"I knew I could no longer be John's wife, it was a sad and terrifying decision," she read from her book.
Elizabeth told the Today Show she has finally watched Rielle Hunter's big interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Matt Lauer asked, "What'd you think?"
Elizabeth replied, "I still think this person is so completely unlike me that it's hard to imagine that the same person could marry me and be attracted to that woman as well."
Elizabeth also told the new issue of People magazine that John no longer has a romantic relationship with his ex-mistress.
Sandra Sobieraj Westfall, the Washington correspondent for People said, "She says 'All I know is what John tells me and that's absolutely not, under no circumstances.' But then she acknowledges that she's probably the last person in the world to know the truth about that and I think she's very wary of being fooled again."
So what is John Edwards' life like in the wake of his fall from grace? He lives in a modern rented home in North Carolina, around 16 miles from the sprawling estate he shared with Elizabeth. And he reportedly frequents local bars, where he's said to pick up attractive women.
"Elizabeth has seen the tabloid reports that John's out at bars hitting on women and she didn't dispute them. She said 'I know he's out making new friends,'" Westfall said.
Last spring, doctors found a new tumor in Elizabeth's hip. She says her hope is to live for eight more years because she wants to see her youngest children, Emma Claire and Jack go to college, and to hold her eldest daughter Cate's own children. "Eight years. That's what I ask for."
