Arkansas Girl, 5, Left in Critical Condition After Dresser and TV Fall on Her
Her father said she was trying to climb onto the dresser when the accident happened.
An Arkansas 5-year-old girl was left in critical condition after both a television and dresser toppled onto her while she was playing.
Adryanna Nicole was preparing to watch a movie with other children while at home earlier this month when she pulled out a dresser drawer and tried to climb onto it. It then fell on her along with the television on top, her family told WREG.
"Mom ran outside yelling, 'Please call someone call 911. Please someone call 911," James Stone, Adryanna’s father, told the station.
Adryanna reportedly suffered multiple fractures to her face after the TV landed on her. Doctors initially placed the 5-year-old on life support, but she is now breathing on her own and remains in critical condition, according to reports.
Ron Hazelton, a home safety expert, has previously told Inside Edition that these types of accidents can happen easily.
"Children will [pull out dresser drawers], and then they'll kind of use them to climb up to the top [towards the TV]," Hazelton said.
The extra weight of a child can cause the TV and dresser to fall over, he said.
Safe Kids Worldwide, an organization that seeks to prevent childhood injuries, offered some tips to protect children from television and furniture tip overs.
- Secure televisions to the wall or place box style televisions on low, stable furniture.
- Attach furniture to the wall.
- Avoid placing toys or remotes in high places to avoid children climbing to reach them.
- Put heavy objects on lower shelves.
According the organization, a child dies every three weeks from a television falling.
