Boy, 6, Who Was Shot Twice at School by California Gunman Recovering After Lifesaving Surgery

Kevin Neal reportedly fired up to 100 rounds at the Rancho Tehama Elementary School.

A young boy who was shot twice as a gunman opened fire on a California elementary school is expected to survive after undergoing surgery on Tuesday.

Alejandro Hernandez was shot in the chest and the foot when 43-year-old Kevin Neal unloaded some 100 rounds at Rancho Tehama Elementary school outside Sacramento in what cops say was a rampage that stemmed from a dispute with neighbors.

Alejandro, 6, was listed in critical condition as he was rushed to a hospital for emergency surgery. He is expected to survive.

Meanwhile, a GoFundMe page has been created to help pay medical costs for the family, who reportedly lost their home in a recent fire.

"His family needs prayers and support at this time and any donation and prayers are appreciated. Thank You," reads the page, which can be found here.

Cops believe the school was one of a series of random sites where Neal opened fire after he killed two neighbors with whom he had been feuding since at least January, when he was accused of assaulting a female neighbor.

Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston told reporters the school locked its doors and students and staff quickly "sheltered in place."

The "quick action of school officials saved countless lives and children," Johnston said.

A second child was injured in a car along with his mother as they were driving to the school. Both are expected to survive.

All told, 10 people are believed to have been wounded and five people killed before the rampage was stopped.

Johnston said the shooting spree ended when a patrol car rammed the stolen vehicle the shooter was driving before cops killed him in a shootout.

Horrified neighbors recalled the scene to reporters.

"I saw some people running around the school. I thought something happened because I heard, 'Pow, pow, pow!' So many times... 'Pow, pow!'" said Nikloy Didur, who lives across the street from the elementary school.

Police say they recovered a semi-automatic rifle and two handguns that are believed to have belonged to the shooter.
