Elizabeth Taylor’s jewelry collection isn’t the only thing commanding record-breaking prices at auction. Now, the screen legend’s wardrobe is bringing in big bucks. INSIDE EDITION has the scoop.
Elizabeth Taylor's treasures from her iconic wardrobe raised millions of dollars at Christie's in New York.
The priciest gown was one by Christian Dior, made of silver-encrusted brocade. Taylor wore it at a ball in France. It was valued at $6,000 but sold for more than 60 times that at $362,500.
A Christie's auctioneer Rahul Kadakia told INSIDE EDITION, "I did not know if was going to perform over and above my wildest expectation. It was fabulous. A great sale with great energy. Fabulous participation from clients all over the world."
Two of the great star's wedding gowns from her two weddings to Richard Burton were part of the auction. But a sunflower yellow chiffon dress that she wore on her first walk down the aisle with Burton, was pulled out at the last minute by Taylor's heirs.
The flowing dress that she wore at Burton wedding number two sold for $52,500.
A piece of film history, an embroidered chiffon robe Taylor wore in Cleopatra went for $62,500.
And a Versace beaded bolero jacket, emrboidered with rhinestone portraits of Taylor in her famous roles, brought in $128,500. Taylor wore it to an AIDS charity concert in 1992.
Meanwhile, everyone's still talking about the record-setting auction of Taylor's jewelry that raised $118 million. It turns out, many of the jewels were bought back by the jeweler who made them—Bulgari. The company anonymously bid $6.1 million for her emerald and diamond necklace.
It's believed that Bulgari will reproduce this and other pieces for an entire line of Elizabeth Taylor-inspired jewels.
And an Andy Warhol lithograph, inscribed "To Elizabeth, with much love, Andy Warhol." sold for $662,500, more than 13 times the expected price.
