Country superstar Trace Adkins caused a firestorm of controversy during his performance at the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lighting. INSIDE EDITION has the details on what caused the uproar.

Country music superstar Trace Adkins stirred a firestorm of controversy at the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting by wearing a Confederate flag earpiece.

It was clearly visible during his rendition of "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire."

Adkins, who was a runner up on Celebrity Apprentice in 2008, was a big Mitt Romney supporter, and even performed in Tampa during the GOP convention in August.

The Confederate flag is controversial. Some see it as a symbol of Southern heritage, but others associate it with racism.

Twitter lit up with outrage as soon as Adkins appeared on Wednesday night's live TV appearance wearing the Confederate flag earpiece.

One furious viewer tweeted, "I did like Trace Adkins until I saw the Confederate flag ear piece in his ear."

Another said it was, "Absolutely disgusting, this is 2012!!"

And, "Someone tell Trace Adkins the South lost."
