23-Year-Old Kills Himself and Leaves Behind Tapes, Possibly Mimicking '13 Reasons Why'

It is not clear whether he had watched the popular Netflix series (pictured).

A 23-year-old Peruvian man took his own life and left behind recordings, an act reminiscent of the popular Netflix series 13 Reasons Why.

Franco Alonso Lazo Medrano reportedly jumped to his death from his fourth floor apartment after screaming, “I can’t stand a heartbreak,” according to Peruvian news outlet Diario Clarín.

Medrano’s mom witnessed his jump and he was later declared dead at the hospital, according to the news outlet.

Police reportedly found two suicide notes at Medrano’s home after his death and a goodbye letter to a woman named Claudia, wishing her the best, according to reports.

As police investigated, they also found another a note that included instructions with the names of people he wanted to receive tapes that he’d recorded on his computer before his suicide, according to Diario Clarín.

The tapes were allegedly left for those Medrano felt had caused him to take his own life.

It is not clear whether Medrano had watched 13 Reasons Why, but his methods are similar to those of main character Hannah Baker in the series.

Baker recorded a series of 13 tapes before her suicide, addressed to 13 individuals she felt were responsible for her death.

The series, which came out in March and is based on a 2007 fiction novel by Jay Asher, was highly criticized because of its graphic depiction of suicide, the trivialization of the act, and failure to delve into the topic of mental illness, among other topics.

Health experts argued that the show could be extremely detrimental for young people with suicidal thoughts. Netflix added warnings to the series after concerns were raised.

“There has been a tremendous amount of discussion about our series, 13 Reasons Why. While many of our members find the show to be a valuable driver for starting an important conversation with their families, we have also heard concern from those who feel the series should carry additional advisories,” Netflix said in a statement. “Moving forward, we will add an additional viewer warning card before the first episode as an extra precaution for those about to start the series.”
