The applause lasted for a whopping 2 minutes and 39 seconds Thursday morning.
Scalise was filled with gratitude after going back to work following the June 14 shooting in Alexandria, Va.
“You have no idea how this feels, to be back at work in the people’s House,” the Louisiana Republican said.
He expressed his gratitude to his family, friends, God, and doctors, but reserved his biggest thanks to the Capitol police officer who rushed to his side as the shots rang out.
“You are my hero,” Scalise told Officer David Bailey. “You saved my life.”
Bailey sat in the House gallery near Scalise’s wife, Jennifer, as the lawmaker spoke for 15 minutes.
He added: “I’m definitely a living example that miracles really do happen.”
House Speaker Paul Ryan took to Twitter to express his delight to see Scalise back at work.
