Why Losing a Pet Is So Hard
A therapist explains why Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner got tattoos to grieve their lost dog.
With stars like Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner so openly mourning the death of their pets, grief from losing animals is being put in a new spotlight.
Psychotherapist Edy Nathan specializes in grief, and she said these celebrities putting their grief on display on social media is giving others permission to be open about their feelings toward their pets too.
"When you lose a pet you feel it so dramatically," Nathan told Inside Edition.
She explained that a pet is "like your best friend" who "stays by your side through the good and bad times." And this is what makes their death so hard for their human companions.
Nathan said that when celebrities share their grief with the public, others become comfortable talking about their own feelings.
