Some Visitors Left Outraged by Summer Cooling Showers at Auschwitz
Some visitors have expressed outrage at the recent cooling showers placed outside Auschwitz museum.
Some visitors to Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Poland were shocked to find showers installed near the entrance to the former Nazi concentration camp.
During World War II, victims at Auschwitz were murdered in gas chambers that had told they were showers.
The current showers were placed outside the museum, which is a Holocaust memorial, for guests to cool off.
The operators of Auschwitz have said that tourists have fainted in the “extreme heat," so they put up sprinklers to cool visitors down as they waited in a line that has no shade.
Michael Schudrich, chief rabbi of Poland, told the Jerusalem Post: “In retrospect, a more sensitive construction and location could have been found. However, I am moved by the concern for the welfare of visitors shown by the administration.”
Auschwitz organizers also said that the misting sprays do not resemble the Nazi showers: "It is really hard for us to comment on some suggested historical references since the mist sprinkles do not look like showers and the fake showers installed by Germans inside some of the gas chambers were not used to deliver gas into them. Zyklon B was dropped inside the gas chambers in a completely different way -- through holes in the ceiling or airtight drops in walls."
Meyer Bolka, an Israeli woman, told Ynetnew: “As soon as I got off the bus I walked into the shower contraption. I was in shock. It was a punch in the gut.”
More than a million people were killed at Auschwitz during World War II.
