Woman Who Survived TV Shooting Breaks Her Silence: My Instinct Saved My Life
The sole survivor of the Virginia TV massacre is speaking out for the first time to Fox News' Greta Van Susteren.
The sole survivor of the live TV shooting in Virginia that claimed the lives of a reporter and cameraman is speaking out for the first time.
"I just saw movement and then gunfire. Lots and lots of gunfire," Gardner said. "From that point it was very chaotic."
After seeing Vester Lee Flanagan shoot reporter Alison Parker and cameraman Adam Ward, Gardner knew she was next.
"I realized it was quiet and everybody was down. And I didn't know where [Flanagan] was. I felt as though the next shot — I knew — the next shot he was just going to shoot me in the head because that was what he was doing,” she said.
She said her instinct forced her down to the ground and get in the fetal position and pretended to be dead. Flanagan would then shoot her in the back.
"Had I continued to stand, I would not be here talking to you," she said.
Five hours after the attack, the gunman would eventually take his own life after he posted the videos of the shooting online.
Gardner thought the bullet had gone through her spine and she would be paralyzed but that was not the case. Doctors removed one of her kidneys and part of her colon and she was eventually released from the hospital on Labor Day.
She added: “I’m happy to be here.”
She also expressed her thoughts to Parker and Ward: "My heart goes out, they were so young. Why did I live and they were taken? There must be a plan."
Meanwhile newsman Chris Hurst, who was dating the slain reporter, returned to the anchor desk - 19 days after the murders.
He said: “It's good to be back. All of our families continue to grieve the loss of Adam and my love Alison Parker. Alison and Adam had a light that can't be taken from us.”
