Ben Carson Campaign Volunteer, 25, Is Killed in Car Crash

Braden Joplin of Midland, Texas, died after an accident on I-80 near Atlantic, Iowa, between Des Moines, Iowa and Omaha, Nebraska.

A young volunteer for Ben Carson's presidential campaign has died following a car crash in Iowa on Tuesday.

Texas native Braden Joplin, 25, was pronounced dead around 4:30 p.m. at the University of Nebraska Medical Center after he was airlifted from the western Iowa crash site, reports the Des Moines Register.

The campaign said a van carrying four staffers hit a patch of ice on I-80 near Atlantic, Iowa, flipped on its side and was then hit by an oncoming vehicle.

The three surviving staffers were also rushed to a hospital, but not airlifted. The campaign said Tuesday those staffers were "being checked out."

Carson was in South Carolina at the time of the accident and quickly suspended his campaigning for the day.

"I'm suspending all campaign activities today due to a car accident involving members of our team," Carson said in a statement.

Carson released a separate statement about Joplin, who the retired neurosurgeon said he knew personally.

"America lost one of those bright young men today. I had the privilege of knowing Braden Joplin personally, and am filled with a deep and profound sadness at his passing," Carson wrote.

Carson said he's seen an "outpouring of support for Braden and his family from fellow candidates," but did not name any of his rivals specifically.

Carson flew to Nebraska, where he met with Joplin's family and held a brief press conference.

"The thing that impressed me the most is how compassionate [Braden] was and how caring he was about the feelings of other people," Carson said. "I hope his death will not be in vain. He wanted America to be a kinder and a gentler place."
