Boy Who Fought Cancer and Found the Love of His Life at Age 8 Has Died, His Family Says
A little boy, who famously found the love of his life at age 8, has died from cancer, his family says.
A little boy who battled cancer, and found the love of his life in a fellow second-grader, has lost his valiant fight.
David Spisak, of Cheasapeake, Virginia, died Thursday. He was eight years old.
"There's never been a morning with such sadness as today and no words will do it justice, but I'll try," wrote his mother, Amber Floyd Spisak, on Facebook in announcing her son's death.
David had suffered cancer since he was two, and endured several transplants and myriad medical treatments.
He made headlines in November when he went on a date with his girlfriend from second grade. Ayla, age seven, "kinda looks like Snow White," he told his parents. "Actually, she is kinda like the real Snow White because she is so kind to everybody, especially me, because she loves me."
After his illness forced him to stop going to school, he called up Ayla and asked her out. They went bowling. With 15 friends and family members in tow.
He brought roses and a teddy bear. She brought a beaming smile and lots of hugs. He kissed her on the cheek. She helped him to stand from his wheelchair and watched as he rolled a bowling ball toward the pins.
It was the first time he had stood from his chair in more than a month.
On Thursday, his mother wrote: "This day was supposed to come about 9-10 months ago but David just wasn't done living yet so he made his own timeline and defied the rules."
He was surrounded by his family, who held his hand and laid next to him.
"I'm not ready to say things happen for a reason or a message of rainbows and sunshine just yet, but our baby boy was a fighter, a beautiful soul, a force to be reckoned with," his mom said.
"Rest easy sweet boy, you fought an unfair fight with the strength of a thousand soldiers ... You did it with grace; no more struggling. Just rest."
