Staff Remember Nancy and Ronald Reagan: 'We Should All Be So Lucky To Have a Love So Deep'

As the world pays tribute to Nancy Reagan, her former White House social secretary recalled the former first lady's deep and lasting affection for her husband, President Ronald Reagan.

“We should all be so lucky to have a love so deep," Gahl Burt told INSIDE EDITION.

Nancy passed away from congestive heart failure over the weekend, aged 94.

She met her future husband while they both worked as actors in Hollywood in 1952. Together, they starred in the movie Hellcats of the Navy.

They were married in "The Little Brown Church" in Studio City, California in 1962 and from that moment, she devoted her life to him. He was equally besotted with her.

When they took up residence in The White House in 1981, he would leave notes on her desk signed: “I love you more than anything ITWWW.” “ITWWW' stood for "in the whole wide world."

But just two months into his presidency, their world was shattered by an assassination attempt.

Ron Reagan Jr. spoke about how it affected his mother on the Today show on Monday.

"I don't think she had another day during his presidency where she didn't have some sort of fear involved and particularly, of course, when he went out in public. He meant everything to her,” he said. “To see your spouse gunned down in the street and having him almost die is traumatic to say the least, I don’t think she was ever without anxiety and fear from then on.”

Through it all, their love never wavered and when the president was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, she became his round-the-clock nurse.

President Reagan succumbed to the disease in 2004 at age 93. Nancy bade her farewell with a tender kiss on his flag-draped coffin. She visited his graveside often, sitting in her wheelchair for hours on end.

“She was lonely without him and said as much,” Ronald Reagan Jr. said. “She missed him terribly.”

Nancy will be laid to rest alongside her beloved husband at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California.
