Mother of Ambassador Killed in Benghazi Demands Trump Stop Evoking Son's Death
Mary Commanday, mother of Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, has demanded Republicans stop speaking of her son's murder.
The mother of the U.S. ambassador who was murdered during the Benghazi attack has demanded that presidential candidate Donald Trump stop evoking her son's name.
Mary Commanday, mother of J. Christopher Stevens, objected to the Republican nominee and party in general's "cynical use" of the 2012 attack in a letter to the editor in The New York Times published Friday.
"As Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens’s mother, I am writing to object to any mention of his name and death in Benghazi, Libya, by Donald Trump’s campaign and the Republican Party.
"I know for certain that Chris would not have wanted his name or memory used in that connection. I hope that there will be an immediate and permanent stop to this opportunistic and cynical use by the campaign."
Many Republicans, most notably their newly crowned standard bearer, Trump, have used the incident to assail Hillary Clinton, who was secretary of state at the time.
Attacks on Clinton gained renewed momentum after long-anticipated, costly report into the 2012 Benghazi terror attack that left four Americans dead was finally released late last month.
The 800-page report released by the House Select Committee on Benghazi found no wrongdoing on Clinton's part.
But it did state that intelligence had suggested an attack was possible and that both Clinton and Under Secretary Patrick Kennedy should have realized the dangers. It also criticized what was described as the slow response following the attacks.
"It is not clear what additional intelligence would have satisfied either Kennedy or the Secretary in understanding the Benghazi mission compound was at risk — short of an attack," the report says.
