Homeowner Catches Burglar in the Act, Holds Him Until Cops Arrive
Shane Sollars wasn't about to let the burglar get away.
Shane Sollars arrived home to find his house in shambles and a stranger in his kitchen.
"The man comes walking out of my kitchen into my living room," the Indiana resident told InsideEdition.com. "I yelled at him to get back into the kitchen."
Then, Sollars said, he dragged the intruder into the bathroom, where he told the man to stay put.
“He said, ‘I saw people carrying things out of your house and I’m just here protecting your stuff,’’’ Sollars recounted Tuesday.
Yeah, right, Sollars thought.
Sollars lives in a duplex and says he had seen the man before. "He hangs out at my neighbor’s all the time. I’ve seen this guy over there."
The homeowner had been away for the weekend when he returned Sunday to find his clothes and possessions strewn all over his house.
And what wasn’t on the floor had been neatly packed, Sollars said.
"He had literally packed up," Sollars said. "He had my T-shirts neatly folded and put in Totes. All my remotes were stacked by size. He took all my charging cords and had them neatly coiled up.
“Half the house was either broken up or packed up,” he said.
It seemed the intruder had been in the house for a while.
“He drank all my milk and ate a box of cereal,” Sollars said.
Police arrived minutes after Sollars called 911 – the station is separated from his house by just a parking lot. Jeremy Alexander, 39, was arrested and charged with burglary and possession of drug paraphernalia including a syringe and a spoon, authorities said.
He is currently in custody at the Hancock County Jail, according to the prosecutor’s office. He has not entered a plea. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 1.
Sollars says he now wants to sell his home and has no desire to continue living there.
"It’s just a disgusting feeling," he said. "I was really down about it"
