After Boy Is Mauled to Death, How to Protect Someone Being Attacked by a Vicious Dog

It could be the difference between life and death if you follow this advice.

Fifteen horrified witnesses could only watch helplessly as two pit bulls mauled a 7-year-old boy to death in Lowell, Mass., Saturday night.

In video shot by one of the onlookers, the mother of the boy can be heard yelling for help.

One witness says the little boy reached over the fence to pet the dogs and was pulled into the yard by the pit bulls.

Neighbors heard his screams. They also saw the boy's mother yelling, "It’s my baby,” and 15 people reportedly stood there unable to stop the vicious canines.

After the attack on the boy, one of the pit bulls charged a cop, who shot the dog but it kept running. It was later found and euthanized

The other pit bull was taken to animal control.

Police are still investigating the incident.

If you witness a horrifying dog attack, you can be the difference between life and death, but you need to act quickly.

Robert Brandau of Canine Companions in New Jersey is a state-certified animal control officer. He advises trying to force something into the dog's mouth, like shoes.

"You have seconds, not minutes," he told Inside Edition. "Take a shoe and come in sideways and try to get the shoe in the dog's mouth and get [it] interested in the shoe."

He said once the dog is interested in the shoe, you should be able to pull the animal away.
