Big cheers on the Late Show as David Letterman greeted the man who will succeed him next year and they both played it for laughs!
Colbert joked, "When are you leaving? I don't know. I should have asked!"
Everybody's wondering how Stephen Colbert will host the show when he takes over, after all these years of playing that hilarious blowhard on Comedy Central. Colbert shared his plan with Letterman.
Colbert said, "I'm going to do whatever you have done!"
Letterman said, "Oh no! You don't want to do that!"
Colbert replied, "It seems to have gone pretty well, Dave!"
Letterman joked, "They could have easily just hired another boob like me, but they didn't. They hire a guy."
Colbert interrupted, saying, "They hired a boob like me!"
"No," replied Letterman.
Believe it or not, Colbert says he was actually offered a job as an intern for Letterman back in 1986.
Colbert said, "I did not take the internship."
Letterman asked, “Why was that?"
Colbert said, "Because you did not pay people. Dave, I have to ask, the next job I’m taking here, that pays, right?"
Letterman joked, "I have nothing to do with that!"
Like everybody these days, Letterman and Colbert sealed it with a "selfie" before parting.
Letterman said, "Good luck with the show!"
Colbert said, "Thank you, Dave!"
