He owned the gun legally and police confirmed they believe it was an accident.

A New York family is in mourning after a man accidentally killed his wife while he was cleaning his gun last week.

Eric Rosenbrock, 35, was "performing maintenance" on his legally owned handgun when a bullet discharged and hit his wife, 34-year-old Ashley Rosenbrock, New York State Police said in a press release. Ashley was transferred to Saratoga Hospital, where she died from her injuries on Thursday.

“Ashley left us to begin a journey we are devastated by,” an obituary published by the Glens Falls Post Star read.

On Saturday, police said the autopsy corroborated Eric’s story of what happened. Eric, a middle school teacher in Lake George Central School District, has not been charged.

The district released a statement after the tragedy.

“A sudden loss like this can have a profound effect on family, friends, colleagues, parents, and students,” the school district said. “It is important that we recognize this loss and support each other through this time. Our grief is great and our hearts and support go out to Mr. Rosenbrock’s family.”

The couple, who married in 2007, have three living children, as well as a 1-year-old daughter, Vivienne, who died suddenly from pneumonia five years ago.

“Our only saving grace is that she is with her girl again,” the obituary read.

A funeral will be held for the mother on Wednesday.
