A 19-year-old Long Island man was allegedly assaulted during a visit to a fraternity house in what may have been an anti-gay attack.
A teenager has claimed he was assaulted during a visit to a Pennsylvania fraternity house in what may have been an anti-gay attack.
John Mateer, a 19-year-old from Long Island, New York, was visiting Penn State University on Saturday when he was attacked until he was bloody, he wrote on social media. Mateer claimed that he was targeted by a man who told him he hated gay people.
"I am bleeding on my phone,” Mateer first tweeted.
He uploaded pictures to Twitter showing his bloodied face and hand, writing: “Don’t let a frat guy know that you’re gay."

“Got the living s*** kicked out of me,” Mateer wrote to a friend. “The brother admitted that he hated gays. Proceeded to kick the s*** out of me.”
Penn State responded to reports of the incident, writing on Twitter: “We've received several tweets reporting an assault. University police and State College Borough police have been notified.”
The State College Police Department was also notified of the Twitter posts.
“State College Police have initiated an investigation which is ongoing. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available,” State College Borough Police said in a statement.

It was not immediately clear if the attack occurred inside a specific fraternity house or if the alleged attacker was affiliated with a frat.
Mateer noted he filed a police reported and has received an outpouring of support on social media.
“This absolutely breaks my heart. I am sending so much love your way babe,” one person wrote to him.

“I can’t believe what happened to you. I’m honestly disgusted and wish I could get my hands on them. Nothing but love your way, I’m so sorry,” another person wrote to him.
By Monday, Mateer’s tweet depicting his wounds had been shared on Twitter more than 11,000 times.
Calls made to State College Police, Penn State University and University police have not been returned.
