A Filipino priest is in hot water with the Catholic Church after video surfaced showing him riding a hoverboard during mass.
The priest, who has not been named, used the gadget to greet churchgoers before the final blessing of this year’s Christmas Eve Mass, according to the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Pablo in Laguna, southeast of the capital Manila.
“As a way of greeting his parishioners, the priest sang a Christmas song, while going around the nave standing on a hoverboard. That was wrong,” the Diocese said in a statement.
In the video, the priest can be gliding up and down aisles while singing in English and Tagalong, as many in the pews applauded and took photos.
But Church officials were not nearly as pleased, saying: “The Eucharist demands utmost respect and reverence. It is the Memorial of the Lord’s Sacrifice. It is the source and summit of Christian life. It is the Church’s highest form of worship.
“Consequently, it is not a personal celebration where one can capriciously introduce something to get the attention of the people.”
The priest has since been removed from the parish to “spend some time to reflect on this past event,” the Diocese said.
“The priest said that it was a wakeup call for him; he acknowledged that his action was not right and promised that it will not happen again,” the Diocese said. “He would like to apologize for what happened.”
The video was first posted on Facebook by Novus Ordo, a Catholic organization in favor of holding mass in the traditional Latin.
“This calls for a reparation! Instead, pray a rosary for this priest and attend a Traditional Latin Mass!” the group wrote when it posted the footage.
Others praised the priest for his fun spirit.
“I'm all for reverence, but this is actually fun. The Catholic Church needs something to make Mass a little more interesting,” one person wrote.
“I think it was a playful way to reach his young parishioners. My teens enjoyed watching him and would love to see a priest connect with them on this level. Who said praying and learning the word of God cannot be fun?” another posted.
