1st Graders Discover Rare Jefferson Sloth Fossil in Northern California

Elementary school kids in Santa Cruz, California, stumbled upon one of the rarest finds in the state’s history. While out hiking, they discovered what looked like an unusual stick. A paleontologist from the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History investigated the item further and discovered it was a Jefferson sloth fossil. The Ice Age animal is around 11,000 – 300,000 years old.
