Why Are Some Stores Locking Up Ice Cream?
Some stores are putting security lids on pints of high-end ice cream amid a shoplifting epidemic. A Manhattan drugstore is protecting its ice cream with a heavy-duty chain and padlock. At another store, a clerk needs to unlock the freezer if you want to buy ice cream. Ice cream theft can be a real money-maker for shoplifters. Police say they steal the pints in bulk, store them in coolers and then resell them to mom-and-pop stores for cheap.
