Old-timers like Bob McIntosh, 71, are coming out of retirement to fill empty lifeguard chairs. McIntosh worked as a lifeguard in college and for many decades he had a successful career with the U.S. State Department. Fourteen years ago he retired, but he was interested in finding part-time work. Lo and behold, he was hired as a lifeguard in New Jersey. “He's a reliable, serious, professional lifeguard. And he's here all summer, he doesn't go back to school,” says Judith Josephs, who hired him.
