Ruling Says Alfonso Riberio’s 'Carlton' Dance Cannot Be Copyrighted

February 15, 2019

The popular dance known as “The Carlton” cannot be copyrighted. The new ruling by the U.S. Copyright Office is a defeat for actor Alfonso Ribeiro. Ribeiro claims to have originated the moves on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” in 1991. He brought it back to life on “Dancing with the Stars.” The Copyright Office says that the dance isn’t elaborate enough to let Ribeiro own it and prevent others from having fun doing it.
