When Yesbely Fernandez saw black smoke pouring out of a lower apartment, she put a wet towel down in front of her closed door and stuck her head out the window until it was deemed safe to evacuate. Fire officials say the front door of the apartment where the fire started remained open, allowing toxic smoke to spread. Keeping doors closed during a fire can make a massive difference in terms of fire spread and smoke damage.
