Why the Endangered Nene Hawaiian Goose Is in Southern California

Wildlife experts are wondering how four endangered geese ended up in Southern California. Nene, also known as Hawaiian Geese, are native to the Hawaiian Islands and are the state’s bird. The geese are being cared for at the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center in Huntington Beach. Nene were almost extinct in the 1950s, with only about 50 in their population. With conservation and breeding programs, their numbers are up to about 3,800.
