The family is looking forward to showing their little boy his new digs.

A toddler who has been in the hospital since he was born is finally heading home.

Matteo Duran, 1, has congenital myotonic dystrophy, a genetic disorder that causes muscle weakness. He's been receiving treatment at Ranken Jordan Pediatric Bridge Hospital in St. Louis, Mo., since his birth a year ago.

But on Monday, he was discharged.

"We've been waiting for this for a long, long time," Matteo's father, Luis Duran, told KMOV. "He finally gets to come home."

Matteo will still need the help of five in-home nurses, as well as plenty of medical equipment.

"The biggest thing is he's used to having nurses 24/7, so a lot of good care, and getting used to all of that equipment, it's a big adjustment," said Chris Evans of Preferred Pediatric Home Health Care.

Still, the family is looking forward to showing their little boy his new digs.

"I don't think he knows exactly what's happening, but I know he'll love it in his new room," Luis said. "A room we've had ready for him for a long, long time."
