Now, officials said, a rescue effort is underway to take the bear back to where it belongs.
A polar bear was found scavenging for food in a Russian village, hundreds of miles from home.
It's believed the bear ended up in Tilichiki, on the Kamtchatka Peninsula, after being carried there on a floating chunk of ice.
The bear, according to local residents, appeared "exhausted" and was not aggressive at all.
Now, officials said, a rescue effort is underway to take the bear back to where it belongs.
They'll use a sedative to put the bear to sleep, then airlift it back north.
