The final score was a decisive 5 to 2 rout against Cup holders Japan who couldn’t defend the title.

The players made a bee-line for the corner of the stadium where their families were seated. Veteran Abby Wamabach hugged her wife Sara almost pulling her onto the field.

But Carli Lloyd’s parents were not there. They never come to her games; it turns out she's superstitious and believes their presence would make her too nervous.

She still lives in New Jersey with her high school sweetheart, golfer Brian Hollins.

Now she has some new hardware to put on her trophy shelf. She received the Golden Ball - the award for MVP of the entire World Cup.

The game was watched by millions across the nation in packed bars and even on airplanes.
