Rescuers have saved a stranded killer whale they heard crying for help.

A series of incredible photographs show the Orca stuck on rocks just off the coast of British Columbia in Canada on Wednesday.

A man raised the alarm after spotting the distressed whale and a group, The Guardians from Hartley Bay, headed out to help.

According to a Facebook post by Whale Point, the animal had been stuck for hours.

The team used a water pump to help keep the whale alive and covered it with damp sheets.

"It was a team effort, and fortunately on some level this transient orca understood that we were trying to help," the post said. "She cried often, which tore at our hearts."

After more than six hours, the whale was finally freed - and the group shared an image of it back safely in the water.

"As the tide came up there were many cheers as this whale was finally free," the post said.

Hermann Meuter, a co-founder of Cetacean Lab, who helped the rescue, said it was a long process.

"It took her about 45 minutes to negotiate how best to get off the rocks," he told CBC. "We all just kept our distance at that point."

After getting free, she quickly reunited with her pod.

He said he believes she became stranded after chasing a seal.

"We all cared about this whale and we were just very lucky to give that whale another chance," he added.
